Storing aerosols safely in a warehouse

November 2021

Aerosols need to be stored carefully in a warehouse. Most aerosols contain a liquified flammable gas as a propellant. Therefore, if there is a fire they are likely to explode, causing damage to premises as well as endangering lives.

How should they be stored?

  • They should never be stored near a heat source.
  • You should limit the number stored in each fire-resisting compartment.
  • They should also be stored separately from other goods to minimise the risk of spreading a fire.

How can we achieve this?

In short, by ensuring you have the right warehouse storage solutions in place. Storing aerosol products on industrial racking fitted with steel mesh cages is a good place to start.

Benefits of using mesh cages

  • In the event of a fire, mesh cages fitted around the pallet racking will prevent the aerosol cans from being propelled across the warehouse and spreading the fire.
  • The nature of the mesh means that the sprinkler system can still get through to extinguish the fire effectively.
